Abstract

Flame retardants play a crucial protective function to reduce overall fire risks by suppressing the spread of fires or by delaying the flashover time of a fire. In the past, asbestos was used as a flame retardant, and then salts such as ammonium phosphate and ammonium chloride were used because of their effectiveness in flame retardancy. In this paper, flame retardant finishing on different natural, synthetic, and blended fibers, as well as different chemicals and smart materials with different applications on textiles, will be discussed. Bio-based materials were also used, so that these materials are environmentally friendly and biodegradable. The most popular method to prevent the risk of burning is using flame retardants, which are classified into two categories based on their physical and chemical actions
